Church of São João de Deus

Between 1720 and 1721, D. João V ordered the construction of a church next to the Military or Royal Hospital, where the ‘Class of Anatomy and Surgery of Chaves’ worked until 1811.

It is a Baroque church, with a façade supported on four pilasters that hold the central cornice. On the upper deck, in the centre, there is the Royal Coat-of-Arms.

After a long time of abandonment, in the middle of the twentieth century, thanks to the impulse of Mrs. Maria Magalhães, the church was restored under the guidance of the architect Inácio de Magalhães.
