Fort of S. Francisco

The Fort of ‘Nossa Senhora do Rosário’, better known as Fort of ‘S. Francisco’, is classified as National Monument since 1938.

In the period of the Portuguese Restoration War, the ancient Franciscan convent of Our Lady of the Rosary, built in the sixteenth century, was transformed into a fort, in the Vauban system.

In 1997, after great renovation works, the fort opened its doors as a luxury four-star hotel.

Among the buildings inside the fort stands the ancient chapel of St. Francis, which housed the tomb of D. Afonso, Duke of Bragança until 1942.
